Trend - Black watch event in Copenhagen
WORLDTEMPUS - March 6th 2010
"We invented the all-black watch," Hublot's Nicolas Courcoux exclaimed as he introduced his brand in front of 60 guests, all dressed in the same color as the watches found in the showcases: black.
Hublot did indeed fulfill the function of pioneer when it introduced a pitch-black watch four years ago: the Big Bang All Black. However, the ingenious design made it possible to display the time just like a regular watch with color distinctions.
Many a watch brand followed this dark trend as the black watches turned out to be anything but a fad. This was confirmed yet again by Danish retailer Reeslev yesterday, who celebrated the dark watches at an elegant Black Night event in central Copenhagen.
To prove the black watches are as popular as ever, the showcases presented dramatic, dark beauties by Hublot, Chopard, Graham, Ulysse Nardin, Porsche Design, Raymond Weil, and Corum. Each brand was represented by brand and area managers proudly presenting their black swans.
Judging by the wrists of the champagne-nipping guests, the black watches have seduced both male and female lovers of fine Swiss horology. The slender female wrists mostly chose Hublot and Chopard, while the more masculine wrists of their spouses showed off chunky black sports watches from the likes of Graham, Hublot and Corum with models names such as Chronofighter Oversize R.A.C, King Power and Black Hull. Some of these get their black color by means of various PVD or DLC procedures as well as ceramic material. Some are made of titanium, and others steel, but all are definitely black.
Reeslev's owner and creative director, Torben Hansen, told Worldtempus, "I think the black watches are popular due to the fact that most people have owned steel and gold watches. They want something new. Something less flashy. Also, a black watch seems to go well with any clothes you wear."
"By doing these events I get better and closer relationships with my clients," Hansen continued. "Most people do not visit a watch shop ten times a year. But I want to change that. I am already planning the next event."
