Lifestyle - Life in the Fast Lane
The super-fast world of automobile racing is not just about speed, but also about mechanics, top performance and superb luxury. Such is the case, as well, with the world of haute horlogerie, wherein many top watch brands keep pace with the world of automobiles, offering high-tech precision watches that are named for cars, built in honor of cars or races, and even drivers.
The bond between cars and wristwatches has been bound almost since their inceptions -- both borne at the turn of the 20th century. Both realms share the same unrivaled passion for extremes and excellence.
These automotive-inspired watches are high-performance pieces that typically are crafted of high-tech materials including carbon fiber, steel and titanium. Mechanically speaking, what's under the hood of a watch is almost as important as what is under the hood of the finest car; thus, the movements are often of the most powerful caliber and offer a host of extra timing functions. However, unlike the cars/races they're named for, these watches can be worn on the wrist instead of being parked in the garage.
Among those involved in the automotive watch racing arena: TAG Heuer; IWC; Richard Mille and more. In the 1950's, Heuer (today TAG Heuer) was timing rallies and other auto events, and unveiled watches such as the Monaco (worn by Steve McQueen in the 1970 movie Lemans) and the now-renowned Carrera - this year celebrating its 50th anniversary.
IWC has had an on-going partnership with Mercedes AMG, and recently announced that for the next three years it will be the Official Engineering Partner of the Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas Formula One™ team. As such, it has totally revamped its famed Ingenieur Collection of timepieces (first unveiled in the mid -1970s) with automotive inspired designs and auto-racing materials including carbon fiber, ceramic and titanium.
Richard Mille also moves deftly in this stealth racing arena, with several brand ambassadors on board from the racing scene and with cutting-edge light-weight automotive-inspired watches. In fact, as the principal partner of the Le Mans Classic since 2002, it has built several important watches, including the RM 011 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Felipe Massa Watch-- created in a limited edition of 30 pieces in brown titanium.
Significant others in this realm include Chopard, which has long sponsored the Mille Miglia races and creates a special timepiece in honor of that rally every year; Porsche Design, which creates timepieces in honor of its namesake; Blancpain, which is involved with Lamborghini racing.
Sport any of these watches on the wrist and there is no mistaken that your lifestyle includes the fast-paced world of automobiles.
