Antiquorum - Two World Records Achieved in New York
The auction of 414 rare and collectible timepieces drew a standing room only crowd in the auction room, in addition to 490 internet bidders and phone bidders from around the world. Notable international bidding came from countries such as Italy, Turkey and Hong Kong. b prices were achieved resulting in 85% sold by lot and 133 % sold by value.
The competitive bidding for the exceptional Matsuda Collection of extraordinary Patek Philippe wristwatches was unquestionably the highlight of the sale. The rare Patek Philippes stirred tremendous excitement in the sale room and on the internet. Impressive results were attained for each of the three wristwatches. The platinum Ref. 5013 (lot 412) achieved $564,000; while the Ref. 5016 in platinum (lot 413) fetched $780,000, a world record for the reference. Finally, the Ref. 3939 in platinum (lot 414) sold for $ 684,000, another world record for that reference.
"The spectacular results of the Matsuda Collection confirms that collectors today are willing to pay a premium for watches that have been chosen by and were in the collection of well respected collectors, thereby insuring that their own collection will one day be similarly sought after", said Evan Zimmermann, President and CEO, Antiquorum.
Furthermore, several other Patek Philippe timepieces achieved exceptionally b prices. Both of the Patek Philippe Ref. 5970s in the sale sold extremely well; lot 120 , the traditional pink gold Ref. 5970 attained $ 156,000 while the other pink gold Ref. 5970 retailed by Tiffany, lot 220, sold for $ 162,000 . Another excellent price was fetched by lot 318, a yellow gold Patek Philippe Ref. 5004 sold for $ 204,000. Also, the Patek Philippe Ref 3448 retailed by Tiffany, lot 130, fetched $ 132,000. Moreover, lot 404, the Patek Philippe 18K yellow gold Jumbo Ref. 3700/1 achieved $ 39,600.
"The exceptional outcome for our September auction is a clear indication that the market for rare and collectible timepieces is thriving. As the world economy is showing signs of recovery, the demand for collectible wristwatches appears to have recovered to pre-recession numbers, "said Robert Maron, Chairman Antiquorum.
Cartier also did exceptionally well with lot 310, a platinum "Tortue XL Tourbillon Chrongraph Monopossoir" attained $ 186,000. In addition, Audemars Piguet obtained the remarkable sum of $ 228,000 for lot 327, a titanium "Jules Audemars- Grande Complication Automatique".
Also, Breguet attained a superb result in the sale; the Sympathique, No. 2 exceptional gilt bronze astronomical clock accompanied by an 18K yellow gold tourbilllon wristwatch achieved $564,000 at the September auction.
Furthermore, Omega fetched excellent prices in the September sale; the Omega steel chronograph produced in 1942, lot 281, sold for $ 36,000 while the Omega "Speedmaster", lot 288, attained $ 45,600.

In addition, Seiko also faired extremely well in the sale with the GMT Spring Drive Spacewalk. The extraordinary watch that was made in a limited edition of 6 pieces especially for the 12 day Space Mission "Soyuz TMA-13" and worn by Private Space Explorer and renowned Video Game Designer, Richard Garriott sold for an incredible $ 45,600.
Finally, the Vacheron Constantin wristwatch that was gifted to Marlon Brando by Zsa Zsa Gabor elicited competitive bidding in the auction room and on the net. The timepiece given to Mr. Brando to commemorate the theatrical release of "On the Waterfront", for which he won an Oscar, ultimately sold for $ 18,000- six times its estimate.
