Ladies' watches - Cuff designs are back!
Entirely in line with the XXL jewellery seen on fashion runways and rolled out in magazines and on the streets, feminine watchmaking is welcoming a spate of oversized cuff watch-style models featuring designs often harking back to the 1970s. Due to the size of the cuff watch, this trend enables the most creative brands to deploy correspondingly immoderate inventiveness and expertise. Because while the market for mechanical ladies' watches is constantly gaining ground, one should not lose sight of the fact that aesthetics remain a crucial question when a woman is choosing a model. A watch, yes… but providing it corresponds first and foremost to the style she is looking for!
When it comes to cuff watches, Piaget was one of the most emblematic exponents of this genre in 2013 with the Creative collection enlivened by a series of Limelight Couture Precieuse models with an unabashedly Seventies feel. The brand drew inspiration from its own 1970s models to develop these authentic interwoven gold jewellery creations framing colourful dials in turquoise, mother-of-pearl, or heart of ruby.
The trend has continued to develop, as was clearly evidenced at the latest edition of Baselworld. With its characteristic boldness, de Grisogono revisits the cuff design with a new interpretation of its famous Allegra collection in an unprecedented watch version. Its case shaped like a double square in white gold, pink gold or steel set with diamonds, emeralds, pink or red spinels, yellow tsavorites, sapphires or amethysts, extends into a strap clearly inspired by the cuff. A highly original take on the cuff, nonetheless, with a set of delightfully colourful intertwined leather cords embracing the wrist.
DeLaneau also gives pride of place to the cuff watch in its Grace range. With these Haute Joaillerie watches composed of a broad gold bracelet entirely paved with precious stones, the watch brand steps up yet another notch in the field of handcrafts by providing a stunning demonstration of its gem-setting skills. Associated with diamonds of the finest quality, sparkling bright green demantoid garnets escort the wrist in exceptionally refined style.
Meanwhile, Cartier made a noteworthy contribution to the trend this year with its Ballon Blanc - a light and ultra-feminine interpretation of the Ballon Bleu - featuring a cuff bracelet composed of five rows of gold "bubbles" that are either paved with diamonds or silky smooth. This exquisite formal harmony is admirably highlighted by the 30 mm case enhanced by a large diamond set at 4 o'clock.
